While speaking to Variety at the Critics Choice Awards this past Sunday, Layne revealed that if she could portray any superhero, there’s no doubt in her mind that Storm would be that character:
“She was an image of myself, of a powerful chocolate black woman, and I just think that’s an amazing image to have and I really want to play Storm.”
Now Storm does have an actress right now in the form of Alexandra Shipp, who first came onto the Storm scene in X-Men: Apocalypse and will reprise the role in this summer’s Dark Phoenix. And it was Halle Berry who first took on the role in the first X-Men film in 2000 through X-Men: Days of Future Past. With Disney acquiring a chunk of Fox’s assets, there’s a good chance that we will see the X-Men, Storm among them, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point.
The method in which they will be introduced, though, remains up in the air. Some have commented that, to take a page from the comics, Storm could be introduced in a Black Panther sequel as T’Challa’s wife. Once he comes back from being dusted, anyway. Though no doubt many would probably want to see Storm alongside her merry band of mutants first before anything else. But what do you think about the If Beale Street Could Talk actress campaigning for Storm?
Her agents also indicated that they are “actively plotting,” so perhaps Kiki Layne will get her shot at playing Storm. What do you think, though? Would you want to see Kiki Layne in the role of Storm in a future X-Men film? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
If Beale Street Could Talk is in theaters now. Dark Phoenix will hit theaters on June 7, 2019.
