Doctor Strange ended on quite the unique note. In its third act, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange appeared before the film’s primary antagonist Dormammu and demanded a bargain. He was then killed quite quickly and horribly. Then, Doctor Strange turned back time and the action happened over and over again, with Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular hero revealing that they were both now stuck in a time loop. Eventually, Dormammu agreed to leave Earth alone in exchange for Doctor Strange to break the time loop. And apparently, this was something that was foreshadowed earlier in the film.
In an early scene, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange can be seen looking at a watch. A closer examination of the watch reveals that the date on it is February 2, 2016. February 2nd happens to be Groundhog Day and this was clearly a reference to the classic film starring Bill Murray.
Groundhog Day is the name of a 1993 fantasy movie directed by Harold Ramis. In the film, Bill Murray plays a bitter weatherman who, for reasons that are never explained, keeps reliving Groundhog Day over and over again. It seems that the people behind Doctor Strange were fans of Groundhog Day!
