Benedict Wong Explains How Wong Is Different In ‘Doctor Strange’

In Marvel Comics, Wong is a Chinese monk who was a teacher and healer, as well as a skillful warrior who fought when needed. He’s also the sidekick and valet of the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Doctor Strange. In the movie of the same name, things are a little different. Benedict Wong, who will take on the role of Wong in the upcoming flick, discussed with /Film about the version of Wong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

When asked about the difference with his version of Wong, since we know he’s different from the comics, Benedict Wong revealed the following:

Wong is in our world now a master at Kamar-Taj training the fellow disciples and sorcerers, and [he’s a] protector of the Sanctum relics and these ancient ritual books, and it’s where we’ll see Wong and Doctor Strange come together and become, really, allies to fight against these extra-dimensional forces.

So we know he’ll aid Doctor Strange when called upon, but what was his first impression of Strange, and how will they relationship develop?

I mean, it’s not really kind of… At first, he just becomes one of the, a lucky disciple… [waiting until production is done with the current take] I mean, obviously, he [Strange] comes into this world very much as a rookie, and we discover and find out how Strange develops these amazing techniques that he has in the mystical arts, and that is something that Wong picks up on.

So it seems like we’ll get a more hands-on approach of Wong in Doctor Strange, and it sounds awesome!

Doctor Strange releases in theatres on November 4th, 2016.
