Maher sparked controversy on his latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO when the host reasserted his position on comic book fans and took a shot at Kevin Smith. Marvel chief creative officer Joe Quesada took to Twitter to address Maher’s remarks and extended him an invitation to the upcoming tribute event Kevin Smith & Friends Present: “Excelsior! A Celebration of the Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible & Uncanny Life of Stan Lee.”
The tribute event set to be held this Wednesday, January 30, will celebrate the Marvel icon’s career and impact and the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. The event will feature celebrity speakers including Mark Hamill, Michael Uslan, Vincent D’Onofrio, RZA, and Tom DeSanto. All proceeds will go towards the Hero Initiative charity.
After Lee’s passing in November, Maher attacked comic book fans mourning the loss of the Marvel co-creator in a blog post that criticized fans who valued comic books themselves. On the latest episode of his series, Maher lashed out at comic book fans once more as he mocked fans, likening their tastes to that of children and arguing that they are clinging to their childhood because of collecting toys based on their favorite superheroes.
Lee will be remembered as one of the most influential and inspirational figures in entertainment as his legacy carries on in Marvel Comics and on the big screen with the Marvel Cinematic Universe which continues this year with
Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel, followed by Avengers: Endgame, the highly-anticipated follow up to Avengers: Infinity War, and the sequel to 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home.
