‘Birds of Prey’: Cassandra Cain’s Cast Highlights R-Rating

Cathy Yan’s has confirmed in the past that Birds of Prey will have an R-rating. When you’ve got the likes of Victor Zsasz and Black Mask in the roster, you’d pretty much have to go all out at that point. Plus, you’ve got Cassandra Cain in the picture as well. But beyond that, what indication is there that this film could indeed have an R-rating?

Well, we’ve got a bit of an idea now in light of the recent Birds of Prey teaser video that dropped today. Among the various heroes and villains we see, we also get two brief glimpses of Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain. During one of those glimpses, we get a quick, close-up shot of her cast, which contains some… ahem, not so nice words. Have a look for yourself in the image below.

Not to say that swearing is automatically what boosts this to an R-rating. Both Suicide Squad and the ultimate edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had their fair share of words that would be perfectly acceptable to someone like Deadpool. However, we’re talking about a film that, again, includes a roster of characters like Zsasz, Harley Quinn, Black Mask… and Cassandra Cain. This isn’t going to be some simple frolic through Gotham City.

As Cathy Yan indicated before, we’re going with an R-rating with this DC film, and Cassandra Cain’s cast here shows that not only is she not playing around, but like Zsasz’s scarred face, she’s seen some… stuff. You know the other word I could’ve used.

But what do you think of Cassandra Cain’s cast here and what this could mean for the film’s R-rating? Just how brutal or violent do you think things could get in Birds of Prey? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned for more developments on Birds of Prey.

Directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) currently stars Margot Robbie, Jurnee Smolett-Bell, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, Ali Wong, Ella Jay Basco, Chris Messina, and Ewan McGregor. The film is set to hit theaters on February 7, 2020.
