In addition to Robbie who is reprising her role as Harley Quinn, Basco is set to join Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Ewan McGregor in the film. In the comics, Cassandra Cain is the daughter of David Cain and Lady Shiva, raised to become one of the world’s greatest assassins before meeting Bruce Wayne and taking up the mantle of Batgirl.
DC Comics’ Birds of Prey are an international crimefighting team featuring heroines such as Oracle (Barbara Gordon), Black Canary (Dinah Laurel Lance) and the Huntress (Helena Bertinelli). The comic book teams current lineup consists of Black Canary, Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk, along with Hawk and Dove.
The film will feature the female superhero team coming together to protect Cassandra Cain after she comes across a diamond which belongs to Gotham crime lord Black Mask, played by McGregor.
Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is set to direct the film from a script written by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, who has also written the studio’s Batgirl film. Birds of Prey will be produced by Sue Kroll under her Kroll & Co Entertainment banner along with Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless, and Robbie.
