Produced by Margot Robbie alongside Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll and Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless, Birds of Prey will follow the team of female DC Comics characters as they go up against a Gotham City crime lord. Now, Deadline’s report on the casting decisions for the roles of Huntress and Black Canary reveals that this Gotham City will be without the protection of the Caped Crusader:
“[Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Belloin] join Margot Robbie who reprises her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn in a Gotham that isn’t protected by Batman.”
Details on the plots are currently unknown, though the film will center around the titular team of female heroes and villains based on the DC Comics characters and concepts created by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon. Birds of Prey will also feature Batman villain Black Mask as the main antagonist of the film.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Production on the project is expected to begin this January.
Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
