News broke Wednesday that Smollett-Bell would be joining the cast of DC Films’ Birds of Prey. Smollett will be the first actress to portray Black Canary on the big screen. Most recently, the heroine has featured prominently in The CW’s Arrowverse portrayed by Caity Lotz, Katie Cassidy, and Juliana Harkavy. With Smollett-Bell bringing the character to the big screen, new art from the DC Community visualizes the actress in the role:
Cathy Yan is set to direct the project from a script written by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson. The film will be produced by Sue Kroll under her Kroll & Co Entertainment banner along with Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless, and Robbie, who is set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the film. The Harley Quinn actress will be joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell, who will be playing the Huntress and Black Canary respectively. Plot details remain under wraps however the film will feature Batman villain Black Mask as the primary antagonist.
Birds of Prey is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Supergirl, New Gods, Nightwing, and a Deathstroke film.
