Earlier this week, it was reported that Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Jurnee Smollett-Bell had been cast in DC’s Birds of Prey as Huntress and Black Canary, respectively. Now, Winstead has shared her excitement over working on the film with female talent both in front of and behind the camera:
“I’m really excited about the fact that it’s so female-led both in front of the camera and behind the camera. I think the perspective is really interesting and different for a superhero film in that sense…And the idea of suiting up into a superhero suit and it being from the female gaze is really interesting.”
Winstead also commented on what the DC film can do for the superhero genre:
“I think it opens it up to a new perspective and artistic energy that I think is needed in that world. That’s not to say that the films that have already come along aren’t good or valid or worthy in their own way. But I think more perspectives in every aspect are needed.”
However, on rumors of Batman’s absence in Gotham, Mary Elizabeth Winstead simply stated, “I will not go there, but I appreciate the attempt.’
Details on the plots are currently unknown, though the film will center around the titular team of female heroes and villains based on the DC Comics characters and concepts created by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon. Birds of Prey will also feature Batman villain Black Mask as the main antagonist of the film.
Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Production on the project is expected to begin this January.
Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
