Smollett-Bell was revealed to have been in the running last week, having tested for the role of Black Canary up against Gugu Mbatha-Raw, along with Winstead who landed the job over Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers), and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror).
Fans were already excited for the upcoming film but after the latest casting additions, it’s fair to say the level of anticipation has gone up a bit. You can check out some of the reactions below.
Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is set to direct the project from a script written by Christina Hodson (Shut In). The film will be produced by Sue Kroll under her Kroll & Co Entertainment banner along with Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless, and Margot Robbie who is set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the film.
Plot details remain under wraps however the film will feature Batman villain Black Mask as the primary antagonist. Production on the project is expected to kick off this January.
Birds of Prey is one of the many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC Films, including The Batman, The Flash standalone film, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Supergirl, New Gods, Nightwing, a Deathstroke film, and a Joker origin movie set outside of the DCEU.
