‘Black Panther’: Chadwick Boseman Discusses Where Film Kicks Off

Every year that Marvel Studios has a presence at San Diego Comic-Con, they always bring the house down. And during their presentation at Hall H this year, it was certainly no exception. As someone who was in Hall H for this panel, the exclusive footage screened for Black Panther stole the show – with much of Hall H greeting the footage with a standing ovation.

Marvel already made the right decision casting Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa. In our introduction to him in Captain America: Civil War, Boseman exhibited the regal nature that embodies T’Challa in the comics, and with Fruitvale Station and Creed director Ryan Coogler behind the camera for his solo outing, audiences are certainly in for something special with this new Marvel Cinematic Universe entry.

Fans only have a basic idea as to where and when Black Panther will take place. It is already known that it will take place after the events of Civil War, where we witness T’Challa lose his father T’Chaka (John Kani) which catapults him to become the Black Panther. Civil War also had a mid-credits scene that gave audiences a taste of what Wakanda will look like.

At SDCC, Boseman revealed what T’Challa has to deal with at the beginning of the film, highlighting the struggles that are headed his way:

“Because I lost my father in Civil War, you pick up with the unrest of Wakanda because of that and T’Challa trying to take on the throne. Some of Wakanda is not necessarily cool with that.”

One of the Wakandans that is critical of T’Challa’s position on the throne is Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). According to Jordan, Killmonger does not see eye-to-eye with T’Challa in regards to how Wakanda should be ruled, which will factor into one of the major conflicts in the film. Jordan has also described T’Challa and Killmonger’s dynamic as akin to Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto’s relationship in the X-Men series.

If you think you are excited for this film already, trust me – you have seen nothing. The Black Panther sizzle reel was so good that it excited this Marvel fan more than even the teaser for Avengers: Infinity War. If nothing else, to see an exciting filmmaker like Coogler at the helm for this project, audiences better be prepared for a true character-driven story about a man destined to be king.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke,  Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Brown, Andy Serkis and John Kan.

Black Panther will be released in theaters on February 16, 2018.
