‘Black Panther’: Forest Whitaker On How The Film Is About Family

Black Panther will reunite audiences with T’Challa while introducing them to both Wakanda and the nations many citizens. Among the new characters making their Marvel Cinematic Universe debut will be Zuri, an elder statesman played by Academy Award winning actor Forest Whitaker. In an interview with ScreenRant, Whitaker discussed how the idea of family and community will play an important role in the upcoming film.

Whitaker explained that the concept of family and the words many meanings are a key component of Black Panther:

“It’s a big deal. We see the mom, Angela, you know, Angela Bassett plays Ramonda and she…you knew about the history of her father and where he came from and before that. So it’s a lot about family and extended families and community. First family, then tribe, and then community. And I think that’s a big part of it, the historical significance. [T’Challa] is from a princely line. He is a king. He is born into it in that way. And I think that in itself, that DNA is about family, so it’s like that.”

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke,  Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Brown, Andy Serkis and John Kan.

Black Panther will be released in theaters on February 16, 2018.
