This nomination has come after a slew of films that had been hopefuls for the category but were apparently deemed unworthy by the Acadamy. The first major hopeful was the 2008 Batman film The Dark Knight, which earned over eight Academy Award nominations including Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing, and Best Cinematography. The film won two Academy Awards but was never nominated for Best Picture.
Fast forward almost ten years later and two other films became contenders for major Oscar consideration that did not involve effects related nominations. Those two films were the 2017 superhero films Logan and Wonder Woman. Despite a strong campaign on the part of Warner Brothers, Wonder Woman was snubbed for any Oscar nominations. Logan would go on to become the first film to be nominated for a major Acadamy Award since The Dark Knight for Best Adapted Screenplay but was snubbed for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. But at long last, one comic book adaptation has finally broken this curse.
When it was released in February of 2018, Black Panther constantly broke records and received a massive wave of critical praise. It quickly became one of the highest-grossing films of all time, ultimately earning well over $700 million in the United States alone and over $1.3 billion worldwide. The film had also been nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama at the Golden Globes. And this latest nomination goes to show that Black Panther and comic book movies are here to stay.
What do you all make of Black Panther‘s Best Picture nomination? Does it deserve the Oscar? Should this groundbreaking nomination have been given to an earlier film? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
