‘Black Panther’ Producer Says Film Will Not Tell An Origin Story

Next year, Black Panther will arrive in theaters and reunite fans with the titular hero in his home nation of Wakanda. Having made his debut in Captain America: Civil War, audiences are already familiar with the events that propelled young T’Chaka to the position of King of Wakanda, meaning much of the character’s origin story has already been explored. In an interview with Complex, producer Nate more shared some minor plot details and explained how the film will not tell a traditional superhero origin story.

Revealing where the film will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, Moore discussed the challenging situation T’Chaka will find himself in when the film begins:

“What’s great is that people have already met Chadwick [Boseman] in Civil War, so now we get to jump in feet first without having to tell a more traditional origin story. We meet him as his world is changing. Black Panther takes place right after the events of Civil War, so T’Challa’s father has just been killed, he has returned home to Wakanda, and T’Challa has to navigate potentially becoming the new ruler of this nation. He never intended to become the king for years because he figured his dad would be around for a long time. T’Chaka’s death is, in a lot of ways, the catalyst for everything that’s happening in Black Panther.”

So, it appears that while we may have already witnessed the events began T’Chaka’s journey, there will still be much for the character to discover and learn as he ascends to the throne of Wakanda sooner than he ever expected. Are you excited for the film? Share your thoughts below!

“Black Panther” follows T’Challa who, after the events of “Captain America: Civil War,” returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke,  Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Brown, Andy Serkis and John Kan.

Black Panther will be released in theaters on February 16, 2018.
