The Daily Show host Trevor Noah made an appearance at the 2019 Oscars ceremony to introduce the montage for Best Picture nominee Black Panther. During his speech, Trevor Noah joked about growing up in the fictional Wakanda and said the real Xhosa phrase, “Abelungu abazi ubu ndiyaxoka.” However, when Noah Trevor translated the phrase for the audience, he explained that it means “In times like these, we are stronger when we fight together than when we try to fight apart.” Those who understood the language, on the other hand, realized that the phrase actually translates to “White people don’t know I’m lying.”
