How ‘Black Panther’ Villain Ulysses Klaue’s Vendetta Will Be Adapted

Avengers: Age of Ultron changed things up a little bit with Ulysses Klaue’s villainous origin story, since he lost his hand to the titular robot instead of T’Chaka, who was the Black Panther at the time. Things changed even more with Captain America: Civil War when Klaue didn’t kill T’Chaka as an act of revenge, as the Wakandan king’s death was instead orchestrated by Helmut Zemo, leading to T’Chaka’s son T’Challa succeeding his father as the Black Panther. Andy Serkis reveals that in spite of these changes, Klaue will still be out for T’Challa’s blood in some way.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Serkis revealed that Klaue’s vendetta seems to be against Wakanda as a nation as opposed to T’Challa, but he’s got a knife out for the newly-anointed Wakandan king:

“He is the only person who has been into Wakanda and seen the wealth that it has and he wants to expose that. He believes them to be a hypocritical country. They’re playing this kind of ‘we’re a third world country’ card and he knows what’s underlying that so he’s trying to expose that. He is the bringer-down of governments. He collaborates. He’s an arms dealer. He knows how to play people and he has a personal vendetta against T’Challa as well.”

Part of what’s made interesting about Klaue in the comics is that he’s traditionally represented the ugliest parts of imperialism, and it’s interesting to see elements of that reflected in Klaue’s revised backstory. If Marvel Studios plays their cards right, Klaue could be yet another villain that combats concerns that their movie villains aren’t fleshed-out enough.

Black Panther strikes on February 16, 2018. The movie will feature a cast that includes Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa (Black Panther), Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, John Kani as T’Chaka, Sterling K. Brown as N’Jobu, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Kilmonger, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, and Winston Duke as M’Baku (Man-Ape). In addition, Atandwa Kani has been cast in an unspecified role.
