Black Panther star Letitia Wright explains her role as Shuri, princess of Wakanda and T'Challa's sister, in the Marvel film.
Case in point, the film will also introduce T’Challa’s sister Shuri, played by Letitia Wright (Humans), who not only supports her brother’s new responsibilities as superhero and king, but she will also be developing some cool new tech. While speaking to Interview Magazine, Wright explained Shuri’s role in the film:
“She’s princess of Wakanda, but also she designs all of the new technology there. She has an innovative spirit and an innovative mind, and she wants to take Wakanda to a new place. Also, she has a great fashion sense, better than mine. She’s so vibrant, a beautiful spirit, but also so focused on what she does. And that’s good for other people to see, especially for young people to see, because it’s like, ‘Look, there’s a young black girl who loves technology and she’s from Africa.’ It’s something refreshing.”
Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Brown, Andy Serkis and John Kan.
Black Panther follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.
Marvel’s Black Panther hits theaters on February 16, 2018.
