According to Murphy, the studio had discussions about whether or not to make it an R-rated feature early on in the project’s development.
Cate Shortland (Lore) is set to direct the project centered on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most popular female character from a script written by Jac Schaeffer. Schaeffer is best known for writing Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, and the 2009 sci-fi romance TiMER which she also directed.
Plot details remain under wraps, however, the film is expected to feature events that occurred prior to the character’s debut in Iron Man 2. The standalone has the opportunity to explore the widow program which would reveal the origin of Black Widow and how she was molded into the formidable assassin she is known as to audiences today. In the comics, Natasha Romanoff was trained by the Winter Soldier himself, Bucky Barnes played by Sebastian Stan in the films.
