Although there are few details on what the future holds for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame, fans do know that Marvel Studios plans to explore Natasha Romanoff’s past in a Black Widow solo movie. Rumors claimed the project could be Marvel’s first R-rated feature film, but Kevin Feige confirmed those rumors can be put to rest after being asked about the speculation:
“It never was going to be. Somebody writes, ‘I hear it’s R-rated!’ And then everybody writes it up.”

Directed by By Cate Shortland from a script written by Ned Benson and Jac Schaeffer, the Black Widow film is expected to take place before the character’s debut in Iron Man 2. The standalone film has the opportunity to explore the widow program, which would reveal the origin of Black Widow and how she became the formidable assassin she is today. In the comics, Natasha Romanoff was trained by the Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes, who is played by Sebastian Stan in the films.
