‘Blade Runner 2049’ Director Wanted David Bowie To Play The Villain

According to Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve, David Bowie was considered for the role of the film’s primary antagonist before he lost his battle against liver cancer last year.

Talking to Metro, Villeneuve reveals that the new Blade Runner villain Neander Wallace was a role created with David Bowie in mind, as he felt the legendary rock star influenced the way the futuristic world was designed:

“Our first thought [for the actor portraying the character] had been David Bowie, who had influenced Blade Runner in many ways. When we learned the sad news, we looked around for someone like that.”

30 Seconds to Mars musician and actor Jared Leto was cast in the role instead, as Villeneuve envisioned the character as having some “rock star” characteristics to his appearance. In any case, Bowie would have likely aced the role if he had been officially cast in the film and had he lived to complete it.

Blade Runner 2049 will show audiences things they won’t believe on October 6, 2017. Its cast includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Hiam Abbass, Barkhad Abdi, Ana de Armas, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Lennie James, Carla Juri, Jared Leto, Edward James Olmos, and Robin Wright.
