Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer Writing ‘Blue Beetle’ Movie For Warner Bros. & DC

The Wrap reports that Warner Bros. and DC are developing a Blue Beetle film.

Mexican-Born filmmaker Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is set to pen the script for a Blue Beetle film, which will reportedly center on Mexican-American boy Jaime Reyes, the third character to take on the Blue Beetle mantle in the comics. The project will be the studio’s first latinx superhero film.

Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer credits include re-writing the screenplay for Universal Pictures’ reimagining of Scarface and penning the script for Sony’s English-language adaptation of Miss Bala.

In DC Comics lore, Dan Garrett was an archeologist who discovered the Blue Beetle Scarab and used its power to fight crime. Though his successor, Ted Kord, was unable to harness the Scarab’s power, the brilliant billionaire took on the Blue Beetle mantle from his mentor using technology and martial arts. Years later, a teenage boy named Jaime Reyes came into the possession of the Blue Beetle Scarab and used it to manifest a weaponized exoskeleton. Taking on the Beetle Mantle, Jaime used the suit to fight crime alongside his two best friends Brenda and Paco.

Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, Jaime Reyes made his first appearance in DC’s Infinite Crisis #5 in 2006.
