‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Surpasses Both ‘Amazing’ Films At Box Office

In terms of financial success, Spider-Man could very much stand on his own. Even though both of Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films never grossed as much at the box office as Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, they both grossed a considerable $757.9 million and $709.0 million worldwide respectively.

Unfortunately, due to the disappointing reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, plans to expand that franchise into its own cinematic universe fell through now that Spidey has swung back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe thanks to a deal between Sony and Marvel Studios.

Tom Holland’s version of Peter Parker was first introduced in Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War. Holland’s sample size in that film was universally acclaimed, and his first solo outing with Homecoming has been a major success for Sony. As of the publishing of this article, Homecoming has now surpassed both Amazing Spider-Man films at the domestic box office with an impressive $264.9 million. The first Amazing Spider-Man film grossed $262 million domestically while the second one grossed a not-so-stellar $202.9 million.

Homecoming still trails behind the box office performances of Raimi’s trilogy. The first Spider-Man film broke box office records in 2002, and grossed $403.7 million domestically. Meanwhile, Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 both grossed $373.6 million and $336.5 million respectively at the U.S. box office.

In worldwide totals, Homecoming is still behind the Webb films, with $584.9 million in total as of the publishing of this article. With Spider-Man standing on his own, all six theatrical outings for the webhead have grossed a combined $1.8 billion domestically and a whopping $4.5 billion worldwide.
