Box Office: ‘Split’ Takes No. 1 Spot; ‘Resident Evil’ Opens In 4th Place

January is always an imbalanced time at the box office. Things are a little bit slower, there are less quality films opening, and awards season films are still rolling over into the new year and still gaining more traction.

This week, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter opened in fourth place with $13.9 million, right on track with its predictions. The film is the sixth and final movie in the franchise series and picks up immediately after Resident Evil: Retribution. Overseas, it’s expected to bring in a total of $75 million once the weekend is over. Critically, it received a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In first place is M. Night Shyamalan’s Split with $26.3 million. Domestically it has grossed $78 million after two weeks at the box office. The film follows the story of three girls who are kidnapped by a man with various and distinct personalities. Split stars James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Haley Lu Richardson.

Coming in second place is the heavily criticized and controversial A Dog’s Purpose with $18.4 million. A video of of the dog being abused was released prior to the film’s debut and the movie subsequently received backlash for the dog’s treatment.

Dropping to third place but still on a high following awards recognition, Hidden Figures grossed $14 million over the weekend. This brings its six-week total to $104 million. The film, starring Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monae is up for several Academy Awards, including one for Best Picture.

Rounding out the top five is Damien Chazelle’s musical romance, La La Land with $12.1 million. The film’s six-week run has grossed a total of $106.5 million and it’s also up for several Academy Awards. Elsewhere at the box office, Matthew McConaughey’s Gold landed at number ten with $3.4 million and is the worst debut at the box office of his career thus far.
