‘TMNT 2’ Opens With $35.3 Million; ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Crosses $400 Million Mark Worldwide

The numbers are in and it looks like the Turtles have beaten the X-Men. According to THR, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opened to a disappointing $35.3 million at the North American box office this weekend. For comparison, its predecessor opened to $65.6 million a couple of years ago. The movie also earned $34 million overseas for a current worldwide total of $69.3 million for its first week.

As for Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, the movie earned the #2 spot with $22.3 million, meaning that it suffered a massive 66% drop. However, the movie did much better overseas as it raked in $84.4 million and has now crossed the $400 million mark globally after two weeks. The movie scored an impressive $59 million debut in China so it looks like it’s going to have a good run at the box office despite its mixed reviews.

It’s going to be interesting to see how both X-Men: Apocalypse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows perform next weekend due to the fact that Warcraft, Now You See Me 2 and The Conjuring 2 will also be released in the United States in a few days. What do you guys think? Which of these movies is going to take the #1 spot next week? Feel free to place your bets in the comment section below.
