DC Universe Casts Brec Bassinger As Courtney Whitmore In ‘Stargirl’

Entertainment Weekly reports that Brec Bassinger has been cast as the lead character in DC Universe’s Stargirl series.

Based on the DC Comics character created by series executive producer Geoff Johns, Stargirl will follow Courtney Whitemore as a highs school student who inspires a young group of heroes to the fight villains from the past. Now, School of Rock star Brec Bassinger has been cast as Courtney Whitmore and Geoff Johns – who based the character on his sister, who died in a plane crash in 1996 – made the following statement on why the young actress is the perfect choice to play the role:

“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger. Brec’s warmth, strength, humor and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”

Brec Bassinger’s previous credits include All NightBella & the Bulldogs, and the upcoming film Saturday Night at Starlight.

High school sophomore Courtney Whitmore who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series premiering in 2019, produced by Warner Bros. Television, Mad Ghost Productions and Berlanti Productions.

Geoff Johns will write and executive produce the 13-episode first season of Stargirl. Sarah Schechter and Arrowverse boss Greg Berlanti will also serve as executive producers on the series.

Stargirl is expected to debut on DC Universe in 2019.
