Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Rockets To $500 Million Worldwide

Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson is already expected to cross the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office.

Marvel’s first female-led superhero film featuring Brie Larson in the titular role took in another $10.9 million on Monday, bringing its domestic total to $164.4 million after its whopping $153 million domestic debut this past weekend. Overseas, the film has already taken in 325.6 million and is expected to fly past the $500 million mark milestone after just five days in theaters according to Variety.

With its domestic debut of $153 million, Captain Marvel has earned itself the seventh highest domestic opening Marvel Studios film, taking the spot from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 in the 21-installment franchise. The Brie Larson-led superhero film also managed to pass the international debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($281M) with its massive worldwide launch of $455 million and is well on its way to joining the billion-dollar club.

Mississipi Grind helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have directed from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg and Jude Law. The film is now playing.

Following her debut in her titular standalone film, Brie Larson will return to face Thanos in April when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019, however, it remains unclear as to whether or not Samuel L Jackson will appear.

Plot details are still under wraps but the Avengers are expected to attempt to undo Thanos’ snap which gave way to the decimation of half of the Universe after the heroes failed to stop the Mad Titan from collecting all six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. The highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War follow-up will conclude the previous 22 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Marvel kicks off Phase 4 with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.
