With a current total of $1.037 billion, the film which introduces Brie Larson as Captain Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become the first female-led superhero film to gross over $1 billion globally. It sits behind Captain America: Civil War ($1.153B) as the seventh highest-grossing film in the MCU and has now managed to pass the worldwide take of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight ($1.004B) in its fifth weekend at the box office.
Marvel Studios’ first-ever female-led superhero film features Brie Larson as the titular superhero in an origin story for Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, a test pilot in the comics who gained super strength and the ability to fly after being caught in an explosion with a Kree device.
Following her debut in Captain Marvel, Brie Larson will return to face Thanos in April when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019, however, it remains unclear as to whether or not her partner in crome Samuel L Jackson will appear in the film after he was dusted in Infinity War.
Plot details are still under wraps but the Avengers are expected to team up with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and attempt to undo Thanos’ snap which gave way to the decimation of half of the Universe after the heroes failed to stop the Mad Titan from collecting all six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. The highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War follow-up will conclude the previous 22 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Marvel kicks off Phase 4 with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.
Mississipi Grind helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have directed from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Here’s the official synopsis:
