Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel On Track For $1B After $455M Global Debut

Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson is on track to cross $1 billion at the box office after its whopping $455 million global debut.

The film which opened in theaters around the world this weekend features Brie Larson as the titular superhero in an origin story for Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, a test pilot in the comics who gained super strength and the ability to fly after being caught in an explosion with a Kree device.

After managing $153 million at the domestic box office, coupled with a $302 million international take for a $455 million worldwide opening weekend, Marvel’s first female-led superhero film has earned itself the fifth biggest international launch, passing Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ international debut of $281 million, and putting it on course to be the next superhero film to join the billion-dollar club.

Mississipi Grind helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have directed Captain Marvel from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg and Jude Law. The film is slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.

Following her debut in her titular standalone film, Brie Larson will return to face Thanos in April when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019, however, it remains unclear as to whether or not Samuel L Jackson will appear.

Plot details are still under wraps but the Avengers are expected to attempt to undo Thanos’ snap which gave way to the decimation of half of the Universe after the heroes failed to stop the Mad Titan from collecting all six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. The highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War follow-up will conclude the previous 22 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Marvel kicks off Phase 4 with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.

A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
