Brie Larson’s ‘Captain Marvel’ Scores Big Thursday Night Box Office

UPDATE: The numbers are in. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel scored $20.7 million on Thursday night, the fifth biggest Marvel Studios opening behind the last two Avengers movies, Black Panther and Captain America: Civil War.


 

Captain Marvel had a great Thursday box office opening as Brie Larson debuts as one of Marvel’s strongest superheroes.

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel is finally here and fans appeared in great numbers at theaters to check out Marvel Studios’ first female-led superhero movie. The film had a great box office opening on Thursday, earning some of the best opening box office numbers of the year. Superhero season has begun with Captain Marvel as Brie Larson soars high in her debut as Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel has had many positive reviews and a few negative ones, but most agree that the film has some great action sequences and Brie Larson is great in the role.

According to Deadline, Captain Marvel is on the way for an estimated $20M-24 million Thursday. The film had the biggest preview night ever for a female-led film. Previously, The Hunger Games held this position with $19.7 million in its Thursday opening when it was released in 2012. Captain Marvel could also surpass Suicide Squad‘s Thursday night opening of $20.5 million. In Fandango pre-sales, Captain Marvel has become one of the sites’ top advance ticket sellers since last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Captain Marvel is doing great at the box office and with these numbers the film appears to be another hit for Marvel Studios.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

The film is now playing in theaters.
