Rotten Tomatoes recently released a statement explaining why they expunged more than 50,000 reviews for Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film had more than 58.000 reviews early Friday morning, the day of Captain Marvel‘s release. It was absurd to think that many people had seen and evaluated the Brie Larson film that fast. Nevertheless, later that day Rotten Tomatoes dropped that number to around 7,000 reviews. What happened?
Well, Rotten Tomatoes revealed that a glitch allowed for the film to be reviewed even if it wasn’t released. This functionality was available in the past, but the website removed it:
“We launched some changes to the movie pre-release functionality last week, which included not allowing users to leave a comment or review prior to a movie’s release in theatres. However, we still invite users to vote if they ‘want to see’ a movie prior to its release, and that vote total is displayed on the site. We have identified a bug in the post-release functionality for the movies that have released into theaters since our product update last week. The quantity of user ratings (which is displayed directly below the audience score and is intended to only include the quantity of users who have left a rating or written review after a movie’s release) had included both pre-release and post-release fan voting.”
Rotten Tomatoes also stated that these changes were done to essentially prevent that internet trolls damaging any upcoming film with what they called non-constructive input:
“We are disabling the comment function prior to a movie’s release date. Unfortunately, we have seen an uptick in non-constructive input, sometimes bordering on trolling, which we believe is a disservice to our general readership. We have decided that turning off this feature, for now, is the best course of action. Don’t worry though, fans will still get to have their say: Once a movie is released, audiences can leave a user rating and comments as they always have.”
Since the Captain Marvel press tour started, Brie Larson has been heavily criticized and misunderstood for her remarks about her wanting more diversified media coverage for Carol Danvers’ first silver screen outing. Along with this, several people were trying to pit Shazam!’s own Zachary Levy against Brie Larson for who the real Captain Marvel was. Levi and other DC film personalities like Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins were quick to shut these people down, saying that both of the films had merit and fans should enjoy them all the same. Apparently, this hatred then translated into bad reviews on Rotten Tomatoes being shut down for the Brie Larson film as well.
