The film is set to be a period piece as Marvel dials back the clock to the ’90s to tell the origin of Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers, a test pilot in the comics who gained super strength and the ability to fly after being caught in an explosion with a Kree device. The film will focus on the character of Danvers while also featuring a young two-eyed Nick Fury and the first appearance of the Skrulls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Skrulls are an advanced alien race known for the Kree-Skrull War in the comics.
In a recent interview while promoting her new film The Glass Castle, Larson was asked by Entertainment Tonight about the pressures starring in Marvel’s first female-led superhero film after the incredible success of Wonder Woman:
“I mean, I feel pressure in that it’s a character that people love and are inspired by and I see that, and so I want to do right by that. And I want people to feel like their character is honored.”
Larson went on to add that the notion that a woman cannot open a film is a rather tired one:
“I don’t understand why there’s pressure put on women as if it’s the most shocking concept ever that a woman can open a movie — it’s like, it’s kind of a tired concept.”
As for Jackson, the Marvel veteran was on hand promoting his new film Hitman’s Bodyguard which he co-stars in alongside Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. Jackson was asked what most excited him about reuniting with his Kong: Skull Island co-star on the project when he praised Larson herself:
“Hanging out with Brie. Brie’s like, awesome. Brie’s my girl.”
Mississippi Grind directors, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are set to helm the project which will begin filming in February of 2018. The script has been written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Oscar nominee Meg LeFauve (Inside Out).
Captain Marvel is slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
