Rotten Tomatoes Considering Requiring Verified Purchase After Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Review Bombs

Rotten Tomatoes could be making even more changes to its review policy following the controversy surrounding Marvel’s first female-led superhero film, Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson.

The controversy surrounding Captain Marvel and Brie Larson came to a head in the weeks prior to the film’s opening, with people online review bombing the Marvel film, plummeting its Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes after comments from Brie Larson were twisted out of context when the actress expressed wanting to see more diversity included in the Hollywood press circuit. Rotten Tomatoes has since began to make changes to its audience ratings system, disabling the “Want To See” percentage score feature for films that have yet to release.

In a new report from USA Today, Rotten Tomatoes VP of Communications Dana Benson revealed the review aggregator is considering making more changes to its review policy, possibly adding a “verified purchase” system similar to Amazon:

“We’ve seen it with enough movies that we know we have to evolve our system. Anyone that has an open system like we do has received this type of attention. Moving forward, we want to make sure our users can trust our audience score and that we find different ways to verify the reviews.”

The news comes on the heels of YouTube having appeared to have altered its algorithm in an effort to silence those attacking Captain Marvel and the film’s star Brie Larson, ranking News sources higher in search results rather than YouTubers slamming Brie Larson and the new Marvel film.

Mississipi Grind helmers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have directed from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Here’s the official synopsis:

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg and Jude Law. The film is now playing.

Following her debut in her titular standalone film, Brie Larson will return to face Thanos in April when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019, however, it remains unclear as to whether or not Samuel L Jackson will appear.

Plot details are still under wraps but the Avengers are expected to team up with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel and attempt to undo Thanos’ snap which gave way to the decimation of half of the Universe after the heroes failed to stop the Mad Titan from collecting all six Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War. The highly-anticipated Avengers: Infinity War follow-up will conclude the previous 22 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before Marvel kicks off Phase 4 with Spider-Man: Far From Home in July.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the Brie Larson Captain Marvel situation and the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we learn it.
