Beloved actor Bryan Cranston announced on Twitter this evening that he was joining the upcoming Power Rangers reboot as the titular heroes’ mentor Zordon.
Zordon was typically portrayed as a Wizard of Oz-esque figure so it is likely the bulk of Cranston’s work will be done in the sound booth recording dialogue, maybe with some facial recognition stuff. Either way, his voice alone makes the role worthwhile now. Personally, I’d hoped they’d snag his pipes for a mo-cap performance as Darkseid in Justice League (did you see Umberto’s report from his set visit today? Brilliant).
Cranston joins Elizabeth Banks, who plays the film’s antagonist and Zordon nemesis Rita Repulsa along with five young unknowns who play the Rangers – Dacre Montgomery as Jason/Red Ranger, Becky G as Trini/Yellow Ranger, RJ Cryler as Billy/Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott as Kimberly/Pink Ranger, and Ludi Lin as Zach/Black Ranger. Directed by Dean Israelite, the film hits theaters March 31, 2017. Here’s the synopsis.
Five ordinary high school kids Zack, Kimberly, Billy, Trini, and Jason must become something extraordinary when they learn their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat led by Rita Repulsa. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover that they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so they will have to overcome their real-life issues and band together as the Power Rangers before it is too late.
