Bryan Singer Plans On Stepping Away From ‘X-Men’ But Not Forever

X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer has been a staple within the X-Men universe since he helmed the first film back in 2000. Now after completing Apocalypse it seems that Singer will be taking a break from the franchise but isn’t ruling out his returning all together.

Singer spoke with the LA Times and opened up about his future with the franchise and how much working in this universe means to him.

“I recently met [Oscar-winning director] Danny Boyle — he and I have known of each other for many years but never met. He was prepping ‘Steve Jobs’ at the time and I was doing this and he said, ‘Are you going to be doing ‘X-Men’ movies forever?’ And I didn’t actually say no. The reality is, even though I’m very desperate to jump to something completely different, I’ve spent so many years in this universe and I love this cast and the characters so much, I just don’t see myself abandoning them forever. Perhaps as a consultant, as a producer, even as a director, I could see myself returning in the future. Just right now, once this one is done, I’d like to do something really different.”

While this was a successful outing for Singer, Apocalypse is not the most successful within the franchise. Apocalypse has already earned $65 million for the three-day weekend. When the four-day gross is added in, the film will be coming in at a reported $80 million from 4,150 theaters.

Even with these numbers, Apocalypse won’t be beating out its other X-Men competition. Memorial Day weekend has been popular for X-Men. 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand made $122.9M and X-Men: Days of Future Past earned $110.6M.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
