Why A G1 Version Of Megatron Did Not Appear In ‘Bumblebee’

Fans hoping to see new designs of the Autobots and Decepticons in the upcoming Bumblebee film might be surprised to learn that a certain villain is missing. Transformers villain Megatron will not be making an appearance as a live-action G1 design in this upcoming film.

During a recent interview with io9Bumblebee director Travis Knight revealed that there were originally plans to include Megatron in the film, but establishing Megatron during the time the film is set could create a continuity issue that would not make sense. Here’s what Travis Knight had to say:

“I had this whole thing boarded where we’re where we see Megatron and he comes in like Sauron, just blowing sh*t up and laying waste to everything,”he said. “However, we then realized in this world, Megatron is currently frozen on Earth, as seen in 2007’s Transformers, so that was out.”

This may be sad news for fans of the Transformers franchise and characters hoping to see Megatron in a live-action G1 design. Travis Knight does seem to give more confirmation that Bumblebee is not going to be a reboot as he does confirm the connection between Bumblebee and Michael Bay’s Transformers.

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfield, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny. Here’s the synopsis:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfied), on the crusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
