Hasbro Officially Confirms ‘Bumblebee’ As ‘Transformers’ Reboot

It’s officially been announced that Bumblebee will be a reboot of the Transformers film franchise.

The Transformers brand made some noise at the New York Toy Fair 2019 and probably its biggest announcement was Hasbro confirming that Bumblebee will be rebooting the Transformers franchise.

2007’s Transformers was the beginning of a five-film franchise directed by Michael Bay. Last year, a spin-off film by the name of Bumblebee directed by Travis Knight, though produced by Michael Bay, had fans questioning if the studio was really just spinning off from the franchise or rebooting it.

Hasbro made the confirmation today at their product presentation which should excite fans of the franchise who appreciated Bumblebee‘s tone being closer to the original cartoon series, as well as the robot designs themselves.

In the 2007 Transformers film, fans who flocked out to the theaters to see the big-screen spectacle saw the hero Bumblebee befriend Sam, played by Shia Labeouf, and makes no mention of him in this new film. Instead, the titular hero meets Charlie, played by Hailee Steinfeld, and embarks on the film’s adventure with her.

The film was also noticeably a way smaller scale, allowing it to feel more personal and give fans more character development, which can get lost in a franchise with morphing robots and explosions. Bumblebee released on December 21, 2018, and ended its movie theater run making over $475 Million at the box office. A sequel to the film has already been reported to be in development at Paramount Pictures.

What did you think of the first Bumblebee film and are you excited to see a sequel? If this is a reboot of the Transformers franchise, what characters would you like to see return? Sound off in the comments below!

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

Bumblebee will be available on Digital March 19, followed by the 4K UHD and Blu-ray release on April 2.
