‘Bumblebee’ Was Solidly Profitable Says Viacom CEO

Despite consistently being the dark horse of the holiday season box office, Bumblebee has apparently been a solidly profitable film if Viacom’s CEO is to be believed.

During the Citi TMT West Conference, Viacom CEO Bob Bakish praised Bumblebee, calling it solidly profitable. He also compared it to Transformers: The Last Knight which reportedly lost Paramount over $100M. And if the Paramount’s parent company’s boss is calling the film a success, the franchise just may have a bright future yet!

Despite constantly coming behind other films like Aquaman and Mary Poppins Returns, the film has managed to earn well over $300M worldwide. While it’s not the most impressive haul, especially for a Transformers film, this was against a budget that was reported around $135M. Fans and critics alike are praising the film’s new direction and rumors have already begun of additional spinoffs, focusing in on smaller scale Transformer stories like this one. Hopefully, this film’s solid profit will be enough to ensure that happens!

What did you all think of Bumblebee? Are you excited to see the franchise take a new direction? Was it better off in the hands of Michale Bay? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Here is the synopsis for Bumblebee:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.
