‘Bumblebee’ Producer On The Next ‘Transformers’ Film Being Different, But Not A Reboot

Bumblebee is the sixth film in the massively successful Transformers franchise. It’s also the first entry not helmed by director Michael Bay, whose last entry, Transformers: The Last Knight, saw the lowest gross for the franchise at the worldwide box office. This fueled rumors that Paramount was looking to reboot the series altogether.

Speaking to SlashFilm, Bumblebee producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura acknowledged a new direction for the franchise but refused to label it a reboot.

“Reboot, I always hate that word because for one, I’m not sure I really understand what it means. We are going to do another big Transformers movie. It is going to be different than the ones that we’ve done before.

Bonaventura went on to emphasize the importance of maintaining what fans love about these films while also delivering something new.

“So how do you evolve things forward is I think the hardest thing because you’ve got to retain why people love it, but at the same time if you give them the same experience, they’re going to be bored with it.”

Speaking specifically about lessons learned from Bumblebee, Bonaventura had this to say:

“I think we’ve learned something in this movie about tone that I would think the next big Transformers movie is going to have. There’s more freedom than I think we originally thought in terms of what we can do.”

Directed by Travis Knight from a script written by Christina Hodson, the film stars Hailee Steinfeld, Pamela Adlon, John Cena, Stephen Schneider, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Jason Ian Drucker, Kenneth Choi, Ricardo Hoyos, Abby Quinn, Rachel Crow, and Grace Dzienny.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Bumblebee will be released in theaters on December 21, 2018.
