Canceled ‘Spider-Man 4’ Concept Art Revealed

We are still riding off of the high that is Captain America: Civil War, and one of the main reasons is due to Spider-Man’s incredible debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We get to see Tom Holland’s Peter Parker swing onscreen again in Spider-Man: Homecoming next July, along with more adventures for the webhead in the MCU.

But before Tom Holland won the hearts of critics and fans alike in Civil War, there were five Spider-Man movies that Sony released. Three of which starred Tobey Maguire as the titular hero. Originally, Sam Raimi was set to direct Spider-Man 4 for a May 6, 2011 release date (ultimately became the release date for Marvel’s Thor). Eventually, Spider-Man 4 was cancelled in favor of a rebooted franchise directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.

Writer and illustrator Jeffrey Henderson has shared 25 pieces of concept art from the cancelled Raimi film. These images feature fan-favorite villains Vulture and Mysterio facing off Spidey. I gotta admit, these images make me wish that in some alternate reality, this movie would exist. As disappointing as Spider-Man 3 was, I still wanted to see where Tobey’s Peter Parker would go after the events of that film. I honestly would have preferred that instead of The Amazing Spider-Man reboot we ended up getting. But at the same time, if the course of events never happened, we may not have seen the Spidey we got in Civil War and perhaps he wouldn’t appear in the MCU. But it’s still interesting to imagine what could have been.

Captain America: Civil War is in theaters now. Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into theaters on July 7, 2017.
