Joe Russo Says That ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Is A ‘Love Story’ At It’s Core

And Tumblr loses it’s mind upon reading that headline, right? But that might not mean exactly what you’re assuming it does. While we’ve heard a number of descriptions about the highly-anticipated Captain America: Civil War ranging from ‘psychological thriller’ to an ‘all-out war movie’, co-director Joe Russo has added one more to the mix.

While speaking with Empire, the co-director referred to the film as a “love story” at it’s core. Now, we’re not talking romance here but more so about fraternal love shared by Steve Rogers & Buck Barnes. A feeling that withstood the test of time and has kept Rogers with his friend “til the end of the line”.  Russo had the following to add regarding this aspect of the film.

What’s fascinating about the Cap-Bucky story as well is it’s a love story, These are two guys who grew up together, and so they have that same emotional connection to each other as brothers would, and even more so because Bucky was all Steve had growing up.

By now, it’s clear that Steve is going to do whatever it takes to save his friend in the upcoming film. But is it worth the cost? Russo said that Steve “has to answer that question for himself, and there are other characters in the movie who hold the opposite point of view. It becomes a very explosive. It incites a lot of conflict.”

Sebastian Stan, who plays Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, additionally commented on the subject and compared their love to each other as a brotherhood.

I think it’s easy and generalizing it to say that they’re lovers, when you’re forgetting that one has a lot of guilt because he swore to be the protector of the other, the father figure or older brother so to speak, and then left him behind. I have no qualms with it but I think people like to see it much more as a love story than it actually is. It’s brotherhood to me.
