Captain America PSAs Will Be On ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Blu-Ray

Captain America has several PSAs in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It's been revealed that the PSAs that don't make the cut will be on the Blu-Ray.

As recent advertisements showed us, there’s more than one Captain America PSA that appears in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It turns out that Marvel recorded a lot of them, several of which won’t make it into the film but will be included as bonus features on the Blu-Ray.

In a discussion with Screen Rant, director Jon Watts took a moment to speak about where the idea for the PSAs came from:

“When I was thinking of what would a Marvel universe high school look like, I was like, their version would be the Captain America fitness challenge. So it started with that, then we just started joking around about like, what if he did more videos? As soon as that door opened up, I just couldn’t stop brainstorming more and more things. Then I made a very – I think you see it for like a split second in the movie, but we made a whole detailed DVD case of like, ‘Rappin’ with Cap’ or ‘Rappin’ With the Captain’ and it was just messages from Captain America to the youth of today as if somehow the government had Captain America make all these PSAs for kids. And we shot so many more than are even in the movie. [They’ll be] on the Blu-ray.”

Watts noted that one deleted PSA mentioned the importance of brushing your teeth, but details on the rest will have to wait until the Blu-Ray arrives. Given that the costume Captain America is wearing seems to be based on the suit he wore in The Avengers, it can be presumed that these were recorded shortly before or shortly after the events of that movie. And it certainly wouldn’t be the first time Steve Rogers served as an inspiration to people off-battlefield in the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe – as seen in Captain America: The First Avenger, he was part of a traveling group that promoted the sale of war bonds, he served as an actor in propaganda films, and he even had his own line of comic books based on fictitious exploits.

Spider-Man describes himself as a “big fan” of Cap in Captain America: Civil War, and it’s been made clear that his school’s principal is the grandson of Jim Morita, who fought alongside Captain America during World War II. Perhaps Spider-Man and Captain America’s stories are more intertwined than they initially appear – hopefully, we’ll see the two interact more in Avengers: Infinity War, and Captain America just might be the main character that will make a full appearance in place of Iron Man in the next Spider-Man movie.

Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7, 2017. The film features a cast that includes Tom Holland as Peter Parker (Spider-Man), Robert Downey Junior as Tony Stark (Iron Man), Zendaya Coleman as Michelle, Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, Tony Revolori as “Flash” Thompson, Laura Harrier as Liz Allan, Marisa Tomei as May Parker, Jon Favreau as Harold “Happy” Hogan, Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes (Vulture), Bokeem Woodbine as Herman Schultz (Shocker), and Michael Chernus as Phineas Mason (Tinkerer).
