‘Captain Marvel’ Tops ‘Batman v Superman’ March Box Office Record

Captain Marvel hits theaters this weekend and the film has already broken a box office record, surpassing Batman v Superman for largest March theater opening.

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is expected to have a successful opening at the box office this weekend. Captain Marvel is projected to open north of $150M, which would top Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s 146.5 million. Captain Marvel has a shot to have the highest March theater opening weekend as well. The film already set a new box office record, playing in 4,310 theaters this weekend domestically. This record tops Batman v Superman, which played in 4,242 in 2016. Beauty and the Beast holds the record for highest opening in March with $174 million. Batman v Superman follows with $166 million and The Hunger Games is the third highest at $152 million.

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the film stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Captain Marvel will be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
