‘Captain Marvel’ Producer Reveals Why Carol Danvers’ Sexuality Wasn’t Explained

Captain Marvel producer Mary Livanos opened up about why the movie avoided the topic of Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) sexuality.

Captain Marvel hit theaters earlier this year, setting the groundwork for the arrival of Brie Larson’s character Carol Danvers in Avengers: Endgame. Although Carol Danvers didn’t have a lot of screentime in Avengers: Endgame, she did play a key role in the first and third acts of the film. Mary Livanos, an associate producer on Captain Marvel, recently addressed one of the aspects of Carol Danvers’ personality that the movie ignored.

Mary Livanos was speaking with Business Insider earlier this week during the espnW Summit in New York. During the interview, she opened up about why Captain Marvel chose not to focus on the sexuality of Carol Danvers.

“Speaking to Captain Marvel, in that installment, that was a movie about self-discovery and Carol re-finding herself. So, in executing the film, we felt there wasn’t room in the narrative to tell that story.”

Although Livanos didn’t directly answer whether or not Carol Danvers is gay in the MCU, she did have this to say on the subject.

“I’d just say I believe everyone’s on the spectrum. I believe in the spectrum.”

The Captain Marvel producer also had this to say about whether or not fans can expect to see more representation in future phases of the MCU.

“It’s safe to say yes.”

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Captain Marvel and the future of Carol Danvers in the MCU as soon as more information becomes available.
