‘Captain Marvel’ Directors To Pursue ‘A Singular Character Journey’

Late last month the news broke that Marvel had signed relatively-obscure directing duo Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to helm Captain Marvel. The Brie Larson vehicle will be Marvel’s first female-led super hero movie. There’s a lot riding on the film’s success, so it’s a bit surprising that Marvel chose two directors who have mostly helmed indie dramas like Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind. In a new interview with Vulture, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige shed some light on the surprising choice, revealing that it had a lot to do with Fleck and Boden’s emphasis on character.

“For us, what Anna and Ryan have done so spectacularly well in all of their movies, albeit on a much smaller scale than they’re about to do, is create a singular character journey. The stories they’ve told have been so diverse, but regardless of the subject matter, they can dive into it and hone in on that character’s journey.”

Feige went on to address the importance of finding a balance for the film. Captain Marvel is one of the most powerful cosmic beings in the Marvel universe. She’s also a pilot named Carol Danvers, and Feige stressed the importance of Danvers’ human qualities guiding the story.

“Captain Marvel will be, by far, the most powerful superhero in Marvel’s cinematic universe. That’s a big part of the story line we’re putting together, and it’s certainly been a big part of the development conversation. Particularly for Captain Marvel, which is going to have a lot of spectacle, it ultimately needs to be about the three-dimensional, multi-layered Carol Danvers character. You have to be able to track her and follow her and relate to her at all points of the movie, regardless of how many visual effects and spaceships and bad guys are filling the frame. That’s what’s important.”

It sounds like Boden and Fleck have hit upon the right formula. We’ll find out for sure when Captain Marvel reaches cinemas on March 8, 2019.
