Last month, Marvel Studios finally confirmed that Academy Award winner Brie Larson will play Captain Marvel, and now it looks like they’ve narrowed down their list of directors for her standalone movie to three candidates. According to The Hollywood Reporter, those in the mix are Niki Caro, Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria.
The report mentions that the studio is taking its time with the decision, meaning that it’s going to be a while until we’re going to learn who will actually direct the movie. For now, the next step will be giving these directors a treatment for the movie, which was written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur). After that, they’ll have to prepare a detailed presentation for Marvel.
It’s clear that the studio is trying to hire a woman to direct this movie, and all three of these directors are definitely interesting choices. Caro’s previous movies include 2002’s Whale Rider and North Country, while Scafaria previously wrote and directed The Meddler and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. As for Glatter, she has directed a number of episodes for TV shows like Ray Donovan, The Newsroom, True Blood and Mad Men. She’s also the main director on Showtime’s Homeland.
Captain Marvel will open in theaters on March 8, 2019.
