‘Captain Marvel’ Producer Promises Film Is ‘Unique From Green Lantern’

To the untrained eye, there might seem to be a lot of similarities between Green Lantern and the upcoming Captain Marvel. Both Hal Jordan and Carol Danvers patrol the vast massiveness of space, both engage with extraterrestrial civilizations, both have experience in the Air Force, and both even wear green superhero suits for at least a duration of their film. These comparisons have some moviegoers feeling a little nervous about the chances of a repeat stinker.

Speaking to Comicbook last year, Captain Marvel Producer Jonathan Schwartz acknowledged the similarities, but insisted that Marvel’s latest would feel fresh:

“I think the characters are different enough and where they come from are different enough that it wasn’t a huge thing. Certainly what we want to do with this movie, and with every movie, is show the audience something they haven’t seen before. And I think that means making it unique from Green Lantern and unique from the other Marvel movies.”

I would not get too worried about the similarities. As they say, there are no new ideas. All we can do is put a new spin on what we already know. Marvel has been doing that and with mostly satisfying results for nearly a decade now. Still, I understand some fans’ hesitations. Are you concerned at all about how closely Captain Marvel looks like Green Lantern? Or are you confident enough in Marvel’s ability to deliver something new? Let us know in the comments below!

Set in the 1990s, Marvel Studios’ “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that follows the journey of Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the maelstrom.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Captain Marvel will be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
