‘Captain Marvel’ Producer Discusses James Gunn’s Involvement With The Film

Before Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn was fired by Disney over offensive social media posts that were brought back into the public sphere by alt-right figures, the filmmaker was rumored to be overseeing the cosmic corner of Marvel Studios’ plans. In an interview with ComicBook.com, Captain Marvel producer Jonathan Schwartz discussed what input James Gunn had on the film before his relationship with Disney was terminated.

Jonathan Schwartz explained that while they talked with James Gunn about the film, the team behind Captain Marvel have been able to work independently:

“I think he’s read the script, we talked to him about it a little bit. It takes place before a lot of what he’s doing happens, so I’m sure the Skrulls will be a fun toy to play with at some point. But I think we’ve really been able to do our own thing. But we love when James gives input for sure.”

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Captain Marvel will be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
