As previously reported, Marvel Studios is narrowing down their list of potential directors for the solo outing of Captain Marvel. The three candidates that were previously reported are Niki Caro (Whale Rider), Lesli Linka Glatter (Ray Donavan) and Lorene Scafaria (Seeking a Friend for the End of the World).
Now it appears that a new name has surfaced: Rebecca Thomas. Mashable’s Jeff Sneider broke the news via Twitter. Thomas is very popular these days as she is attached to Universal’s highly-anticipated live-action Little Mermaid film starring Chloë Grace Moretz. She previously directed the indie drama Electrick Children which is a film about “a young Mormon girl living in an isolated compound who listens to music for the first time and believes she’s become pregnant and must find the father of her miracle baby.”
The all-female list is not surprising as Marvel wants their first ever solo heroine film to have a feminine edge. The director would join Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur) who are slated to write Captain Marvel. With the immediate focus on Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel is not expected to hire a director before the end of the year. I wouldn’t be surprised to hear other names emerge as Marvel has surprised us in the past with some of their choices.
Captain Marvel will open in theaters on March 8, 2019.
