SPOILERS: How Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury Loses His Eye In ‘Captain Marvel’

Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) loses his eye in Captain Marvel from a very unexpected alien ally.

Captain Marvel has many scene-stealing characters and two of the most iconic that have taken audiences by storm is the young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Goose the cat. Goose is Carol Danvers’ (Brie Larson) cat passed down to her by her mentor, played by Annette Bening.

Many fans have wondered how Captain Marvel will explain Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic Marvel character ending up with an eye patch, which he’s worn in all other installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the film’s third act, Nick Fury, Monica Rambeau (Lashana Lynch) and Goose the cat are aiding Captain Marvel’s battle against the oncoming Kree threat.

In the third act, it’s revealed that Goose is a Flerken, a squid-like, cat-like creature with a major attitude towards foes. It’s during this chunk of the film that eventually, as many cats are known to do, Goose scratches Nick Fury, who has shown him nothing but love for the whole movie. This scratch results in Nick Fury’s eye scar, which later leads to a joke between Samuel L. Jackson and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) in which Fury lies about the circumstances of his battle scar.
