‘Captain Marvel’ Prelude Comic Reveals Why Nick Fury Waited To Call Carol Danvers

Captain Marvel Prelude #1 offers fans a look at the moments before the Avengers: Infinity War post-credits scene and provides insight into why Nick Fury waited to call Carol Danvers.

The comic emphasizes that fallout between The Avengers following the events of Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War is a problem for Nick Fury. While conversing with Maria Hill, Fury expresses his concerns about the rift between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers being irreversible:

“Otherworldly threats are one thing, but this rift [the Sokovia Accords] caused between Stark and Rogers might be something neither one can ever come back from. We can’t afford that kind of infighting.”

While Nick Fury still believes that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will reunite if a great enough threat presented itself, Maria Hill suggests having another hero to call upon as a backup plan, prompting Fury to reference Carol Danvers:

“Nah. If we do our job right, we’ll never be in a position of having to call her. Make sure you keep an eye on the raft. Got a feeling our guys will need a little assist kicking the door open.”

Unfortunately, the time to call Carol Danvers arrives sooner than expected as the Infinity War post-credits scene occurs shortly after the exchange between Hill and Fury.

Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.  Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Captain Marvel will be released in theaters on March 8, 2019.
